Origami Dragoon Hat
In this section, we're going to try and make ourselves our very own mini dragoon hat! Origami is a hobby of former shrine maintainer Blaze Tecumseh. He found a way of designing the dragoon hat by experimenting on Post-It notes and forming them into strange shapes. Surprisingly enough, it turns out that creating a minature version of Freya Crescent's helm was surprisingly easy to do.
We'll show you how to make one using this step-by-step guide. We recommend that you use the same type of adhesive office notes that were used to make the prototype. They're cheap and easy to find, and it's no big deal if you waste a dozen of them. You can use typing paper or newsprint just as easily, if you like. Just be sure that your paper is cut perfectly square, though.
If you use Post-It notes, start with the sticky side down. It will help you to hold the paper in place as you fold it, which is another nice benefit.
Follow the numbered steps below to make a dragoon hat:

1.) Fold the square of paper in half on the diagonal.
2.) Turn the paper so that the wide point is towards you and the fold is away from you. Next, fold each of the narrow points down so that their tips touch the wide point. You want to create a "diamond" shape.
3.) Next, fold the two narrow points upwards again, one by one, so that their sides are parallel. What you have now should look a bit like an arrowhead.
4.) Flip the paper over. Now your paper resembles the outline of a fox's head. What would be the tip of the fox's snout should consist of two thin flaps of paper.
5.) Grab the flap of paper that is nearest to you and fold it upwards so that it perfectly lines up with what would be the crown of the fox's skull.
6.) Now flip the paper over and fold the remaining flap of paper upwards in the same way you folded the previous side. What you have at this stage should look like a strange canoe or a decapitated swan.

7.) Crease the paper forwards and then backwards along the very center of the topmost point. You want to create a flex point along which the hat will pop open when you get to step 9.
8.) Return the hat to the shape shown in step 6 and press it flat. Make certain that you still have the correct side of the hat facing you. You do not want to be working from the side that has one flap of paper covering up the folds you made for the "ears" of the hat in step 3. When you're sure you're working from the correct side, fold the single, thin flap of paper down, leaving a margin of paper between the flat fold and what will become the "brim" of the hat. This is the trickiest part of making the hat, so don't screw it up here.
9.) Now the hat will pop open along the creases made in step 7 if you press the bases of the two "ears" lightly towards each other. If you can't get the hat to open that way, just slide a finger inside of it.
10.) You'll notice that the "ears" of the hat will want to point forwards as you pop open the hat. We need to fix those ears in the next step.
11.) Fold each "ear" backwards. It is a simple task to accomplish, since the ears will want to fold flush with the rear of the hat. If what you have at this stage looks just like what is pictured in step 11, you're finished!
12.) Here you can see the Dragoon Hat from two other views, to give you a little extra help in case you've been screwing things up. This origami model is a good approximation of the shape of Freya's helm, and creating it is an interesting way to waste a few minutes. (Or a frustrating way to waste a few minutes if you screwed up a fold somewhere.)
That's how you can fold yourself a miniature Dragoon Hat. You could make a larger hat by starting off with a larger square of paper, of course. A square piece of newspaper would probably make a hat large enough for your dog to wear. Dragoon Dog... that would be totally awesome to see.
Obviously, the Dragoon Hat looks better in red. You can pick up a pack of colored origami paper at any decent craft store for about four dollars. Origami paper is usually white on one side and colored on the other. I haven't been able to figure out a way to make the "wings" of the Dragoon hat show the white side of the paper without making some really complicated and messy reverse folds. If I figure out an easy way to do that, however, I'll let everyone know.
