Not much is known about Sir "Iron-Tail" Fratley, other than he is one of Burmecia's elite dragoon knights and Freya Crescent's significant other. Sir Fratley left Burmecia and Freya behind on a quest to travel around Gaia, in order to become a stronger warrior. No motivation has been explained as to why exactly Sir Fratley embarked on this personal quest of this, though the flashback scene in Burmecia hints that it involves Beatrix.

During the party's visit to Cleyra, the player (and Freya) encounter Sir Fratley, but in a sad twist of irony, he has been stripped of all of his memories, including those of Freya. It is implied that Fratley experienced some kind of accident during his adventure, as noted by rumors of his alledged death. It was when Puck found him that Fratley regained a portion of his memory, namely his status as a dragoon. Fratley is never seen again during the adventure after Cleyra is destroyed and is presumed dead.

At the end of the game, Freya and Sir Fratley are reunited once more and their relationship has been rekindled, though rather tentatively as Sir Fratley's memory hasn't been completely restored, and probably never will be.

As far as the game is concerned, Sir Fratley is a mysterious person and not much is known about his personality, though his sloppy form of dressing hints that he is (or was) a scatter brain and quite often forgetful, which is further backed up by his current amnesiac state. In spite of these irregularities, he is something of a philosopher and a personal motivator, as noted by the quotes found on the back of both the Mist Continent map and the world map.

On the back of the Mist Continent map:

"The road remains wide open while your dreams are alive. Only fear can block the way."

And on the back of the world map:

"Let fear propel you forward. Do not left failure stifle you."
