Prologue - 1 - 2

A long time ago, when the world was younger than she is today, ages before the Great Kingdoms united, when magic and wonder abounded. This is where my tale takes place. In the north-west third of the old Mist Continent, which was then under the rule of the Kingdom of Burmecia, there the capital city, also known as Burmecia, was located. The armies of nearby Alexandria ruined the once great city, the people were scattered. But, the year after peace was made between the Kingdoms, the people started returning. They rebuilt the city, made it even more majestic than before. But a single building was left untouched throughout the rebuilding: the castle. The once beautiful halls were strewn with rubble; the slender towers were nothing but a memory. The only part of the castle left un-touched from the attack was a single tower, the highest tower in the city. It was the home of the royal family, and the homes of all that were in want. Throughout the disaster and the rebuilding, the cleansing rain fell, as if nothing had changed.

But my story doesn't begin here.

I smiled warmly as I felt the sunlight's sweet breath upon my face. Opening my eyes I marvelled at the rich blue sky above with a careful lacing of feathery white clouds strewn about in a hazardous beauty. A deep inhale of breath delivered to me the scent of sun-warmed paths and pure earthen hills covered in lightly tanned corn-yellow grasses. My body felt as if it were overflowing with some unnamed joy as I laughed pleasantly in a wave of childlike innocence at the pure perfection that surrounded me.

Freya stood in the remains of the throne room; rain coming down as it usually did, hitting the stone roof of the castle, some coming down through holes in the tall stone ceiling. It was late, the sun set about an hour ago and a slight chill came into the stone room. Freya pulled her large red coat closer to keep out the chill as she lit the torches that were left in the room. As the torches began to give off their glow, she pulled a piece of parchment from her coat.

'Dearest Freya,

It has been too long since we have been together. I want to see you again, this evening in the throne room. There is something I have to tell you, and something to give you...

Sir Fratley'

"The mystics are all in a frenzy, thirsty for blood," the wizard hissed between breaths, "And I don't think even I have ever seen so many in one place. I can't control them, and we've got just a few minutes until they get here."

"It's a machine in the sky," explained the voice of a little boy. Schala turned and saw Aeron standing in the doorway to his room. "Hi, Uncle Jan. Are you okay? You look like you were fighting! Did you see the big red light, like an eye in the sky?"

Freya and Fratley sat together in silent contentment, enjoying each other's presence and the warmth of the fire. The drumming of the rain on the slate roof over their heads was comforting, familiar, and hypnotic. Freya had almost slipped off into a doze when a sudden thought roused her. "Fratley," she said, "I'd like for us to go out to the old market square in Bentfork tomorrow, to see what sort of seasonal foods are in the shops. I've a craving for fruitcake and those odd little spice cookies. You can only get those near the Holidays."

In the beginning there was the crystal, which brought life, planets, everything in existence. The Summoners learned how to summon the great power of Anima from the crystal. However, the Summoners were afraid of Anima's power, as it was truly immense and difficult to control.

When they discovered this, the split the crystal into four jewels, and they were spread throughout Gaia in hope that Anima would never be summoned again.

Little did they know that Anima was not the only spirit that was contained within the jewels. When the crystal was split rumour has it that four spirits were created, each for one jewel. Alexander was claimed to be the spirit who resided in the jewel of Alexandria.

Many myths and tales have been told of these spirits, but very few have believed them to be true.

However, some rumours are truer than they seem.

Prologue - 1

As the young thief slowly strolled down the tidy streets of his adoptive hometown, Zidane Tribal placed a hand on his stomach. "Ulp-" he belched, "I don't get how royal types can eat that stuff they served up at the palace. I guess my stomach just can't stand being full of that high-class kind of garbage." His eyes scanned the shops lining the road, seeking out one in particular. Though he had only seen sixteen years - far fewer than that had been spent on these streets of Lindblum he now walked - the entire area may as well have been etched into the back of his eyelids. He had but to close his eyes and a map of the monolithic metropolis coalesced in his mind. The particular spot on that mental map that he now sought was a small tavern with which he had become quite taken - though the food there was so terrible as to turn the stomachs of the more delicate ones who partook, Zidane was one of those flighty individuals who became quickly and devotedly attached to people and places. "The food might not be regal quality stuff," he mused silently, justifying his infatuation with the tavern to himself alone, "and it might be putting holes in my guts, but at least the price is nice."
